Name of Shop: Trinkets by Dana
I usually just say trinkets (with a lowercase t) for short.
Category of Items you sell:
I sell everything from paper crafts/decor for parties and weddings to jewelry/accessories... and of course original art/prints/fine art photography. It's a mouthful-- that's why "trinkets" is perfect for the variety!
1. How long have you had your shop?
I've had it for 2 years now. This winter will be the first holiday I really get to prep my shop for since last year was the guinea pig year.
2. What inspired you to make Trinkets by Dana?
I'm a college student currently about to start my Senior year. I started the etsy shop my freshman year during the Spring semester as a personal leisure/hiatus from school work. I spent most of my childhood drawing and taking art electives at school so it wasn't anything new to me but actually taking pictures of my work/selling it online was inspired by fellow etsians. I browsed beautiful shops and saw what they had to offer and thought that I should find a way to de-stress while enjoying myself/sharing art with others.
3. Who or what inspired you to create?
Anything and everything! You should never feel limited in inspiration. Here is an example: When I'm taking a drive, I look at the architecture of buildings and the fine details we tend to miss out on during everyday chores like the architectural details at some old banks or downtown skyscrapers. I do however love going to home decor/furniture stores (or skimming their magazines) because they have a combination of art and architecture to browse through-- plus I love home supplies... :)
4. What has been your biggest accomplishment as a shop owner / artist?
Ooh. That's a tough questions just because the utter excitement/joy I feel bundling up as I try to accumulate my thoughts into words. I think the biggest accomplishment for me as a shop owner was being able to push through the doubts and negativity people would have to offer about my small online business even if it was really just for my sanity at first. The biggest accomplishment as an artist is being able to offer my work to people who have a vision for what they want exactly-- whether its a wall canvas or wedding table toppers. It's also always a plus that I get to collaborate with such a wonderful and supportive art community.
5. What has been the hardest part about starting a business?
Not having a precedent to follow. You can read up on forums and books on how to start but I feel as though every shop is unique and should be catered to differently. It was so difficult experimenting with a new line of items and not knowing its success rate right away or not knowing how to price things correctly so that that you are not under/over-pricing your work.
6. What would be your biggest tip to a brand new shop owner / artist on Etsy?
Don't lose sight of what you want to accomplish with your shop. Don't get caught up in quantity but quality and definitely take your time with the development of your shop. What you have to offer to the world may not get traffic as fast as another shop but that doesn't mean you don't have something special to offer. All good things take time!
